Thing # 23

I have learned so much doing this project, but still have things I need to learn. Yes, I would participate if you were to offer another Discovery Project. This has been a lot of fun – but it does take a lot more time than 18 hours.
Some of my favorites were Flickr; creating the trading cards, learning to create a blog (partly so I can teach the kids to do so), tagging, RSS feed, embedding videos – although that took me more than one try. There was very little I did not like – the difficulty I had uploading the podcast made that my least favorite thing.
Technology is one way to make learning more fun and thereby easier to learn.

This has been a great learning experience – lots of fun and taught me even more than I expected it would.

Thanks!!!!!

Thing # 22

Ning looks like it could be a great way to share ideas and network with other teachers and I really liked the Teacher Librarian Ning. I think it could be helpful to students to be able to network with other students perhaps set up a discussion about books they are reading or a project they were doing.

Thing # 21

I think podcasts are wonderful - I teach the children at my church and seldom make it to the service, so I listen to the podcast each week. Another thing I like about podcasts is that I can relisten in case I missed something or just want to hear it again.I have never used a vidcast before but I can see lots of benefits from them. It would be great to have vidcasts of different trainings so that we could view them more than one time.

I made one but cannot, cannot seem to get it to my blog. I tried and tried but finally gave up. It was fun to make it, not fun to try to get it on my blog.

Thing # 20

I checked out both Youtube and Teachertube. I have enjoyed Youtube many, many times - it can be distracing but fun. I looked at different subject areas. I did find our drumline and karate group on Youtube! On both, I looked up different subject areas and found some interesting things for guided reading. And I think I am enbeding one of the videos in my post (I hope).

I think the children would enjoy some of these videos and could learn a lot. Kids really like to watch videos so I think they would learn without realizing that they are learning.

WOW - I could have spent a long time on Web 2.0 Awards List. It sure helps with trying to find different things. Some of the sites I recognized - kind of nice to find old friends. But the new sites were exciting - It sure cuts down on the time it takes to find what you are looking for.

Thing # 18

Openoffice/suite is free and that would be very helpful to my students since I work at a Title One school and if they have computers they cannot afford the programs that they might need. The multilingual program sounds wonderful. I had no idea that there were free programs - I think they are a great idea, but I will probably continue to use the Microsoft Office that we have installed on the district computers. Partly because they are what is installed on our computers and it is what I am used to and partly because I wonder if the free options are as private as our Microsoft Office.

Thing # 17

I really liked using Rollyo - it should help me keep organized and I do like customizing my own search engines. Yet, I think it might not be as easy for my students - they are in the lower grades and sometimes they aren't even sure what they are really looking for or how to spell it.

Thing # 16

I had used Wiki before and had a vague idea of how it worked, but now I know a lot more. And it is fun! I can see how I could use it for my students. I have different groups of children who are on similar reading levels and we could use one for students in different groups to add comments and have a 'book study discussion'.

Thing # 15

The web 2.0 idea and tools are great ways for making classroom learning in this new century more interesting. The articles about library 2.0 were very interesting. Libraries can be more important – we do truly need all the technology – it is what catches the interest of the kids – and it makes the information accessible to many when they are unable to get to the library.
Yet, there is nothing to compare to snuggling up with a book, smelling the book, savoring the experience – a parent’s holding a child in his or her lap while reading a book or snuggling up with a book on a rainy day. There is a time and a place for the technology and I do really love using it often and yet, I do hope that we never do away with books. I and also my children have fond memories of trips to the library and an image I will always remember is when I took a 4 year old child for her first trip to the library and she is so excited as she sat on the floor, surrounded by books, picking up one after another, holding it to her chest, rubbing the cover, and reading – or actually looking at it, smiling as if she had been given a million dollars – and she began a hopefully lifelong love affair with books and reading.

technorati

Technorati Profile

Thing #14

I did not like Technorati very well. I really like tagging and see lots of benefits from doing it.

It does bother me a bit that companies and/or commercial interests use blogging is suppose to bring it back to the people. I guess I did not really think about it before.

Thing # 13

I love del.icio.us!!!!! It is fun - I did spend a lot of time on it. Once on it, I did get a little distracted, but it is great for bookmarking websites. Tagging is good - that way I do not have to remember the websites when I am in the computer lab or on another computer. And it will be an easy way to share websites among teachers. So we do not have to all do as much research.

Another fun thing about the 23 things is I am learning all sorts of computer language.

What an interesting title - creating community through commenting. Creating community is a very important skill.
My favorite of the the 10 Commandents were:
Be polite - which is the beginning of creating a community. It is a basic part of communication and getting alone with others.
Humor - also very important in creating community and not only getting along with others and getting your point across.
I have been hesitant to make comments on other's posts but now I am glad that I have been 'encouraged' to do so.
I read a blog about what will happen in 2012 because I am very curious about the possibilities that are being suggested might happen.
I read another blog about needlework - another one of my interests.

Thing #11

The Library Thing is really cool! It is interesting not only to put your own books on it, but also to look at what others have put and to check out the groups. It will also help to have a list of books I have read so I can remember what I have read!

Thing #10

Using the on line image generators is lots of fun. I liked Snoopy the best! I think the kids would enjoy making some of these cartoon images and turning them into a story.

I think it will be fun to make these cartoons and add them to my email!

And Making the Banners was fun also.

Thing # 9

It was interesting to search for different feeds. I used the search option on Google Reader and found some great ones. I thought Technorati was the most efficient. GoogleBlog was a good way to find blogs. I thought Syndic8 was a little confusing.

Thing # 8

I set up my Google Reader and I know I am going to really like it.
There are several websites that I visit every day and it will be great to be able to access them from the same spot each day.
I am sure that I will use it for both personal and school searching. It will make it easier to keep up with the different websites I access. And it will save time when searching for information I will need for my lessons at school.
As far as using it in the library is concerned, it could be used to get reviews of various books and also to give suggestions as to books that relate to a specific topic you are researching.
It makes me feel like maybe I am computer literate after all!

Thing # 7

I had never heard of Google Scholar but know that I will use it often in the future for both school and personal research. It has some great stuff.
I set up a home page http://www.google.com/ig
I really, really liked Google Earth the very best - spent lots of time there!
I am enjoying all of the new stuff I am learning.

Thing # 6

Making a puzzle is so much fun - although I making mosiacs was exciting also. And making a Trading Card was great. Not really sure which was my favorite. I really had fun playing with all of these and think that my students will have fun - I think that they will enjoy making Trading Cards the most. It could be used to help them learn to use adjectives - describing various pictures.

Thing #5

I already knew how to download pictures but had never visited Flickr.
It was lots of fun - so many great pictures.
I picked a hummingbird since I was co-teaching a second grade classroom this year and we had a great time studying birds. I learned a lot!

Thing 4

Registering my blog was the easy part so far!
YEAH!

Thing #3

Setting up the avatar was a little trickier.
But it was fun - I love doing new things - even if I have trouble - even if it seems like I can't do it - usually if I keep on keeping on - perseverance.
And one of the greatest things (and there are many to chose from) my pastor taught me/gave me was the 'freedom to fail'. It is what gave me the courage to go back to school at 51 get a master's degree and a teaching certificate - and the courage to try many things.

Beginning Blog

I think I actually may have done this right!
It was a little intimating to start this blog.
But it is fun.
I am interested to see where this will lead.

New Ideas

I don't know what I am doing. I love to learn new things so I am eager to learn how to write a blog. It was a little intimating to do so.
I think the hardest one of the habits for me is # 6 using technology to my advantage - I want to know more which is why I am doing this program. The easiest one for me is 7 1/2 be curious - I am curious about so many things. There is so much I want to learn about so many things - that it is sometimes hard to choose what I want to do next.
